Commonly Asked Questions about Cooperative Education
What is Cooperative Education? Cooperative Education (Co-op) is a formal course which allows students to gain real world work experience in their chosen career field and be graded.
Does the student receive a grade? Yes. Cooperative Education students receive a satisfactory or unsatisfactory grade. The Career Center staff awards the final grade based on the skills development and learning outcomes of the experience and the employer’s final evaluation of work performance.
Since the student is required to register for the Co-op Class, will the student receive credit? While the student is required to register for the Co-op course, there is no credit awarded. There is no tuition for the Co-op course as long as the student is enrolled in at least one other credit course at USF. If the student is not enrolled in a course for credit the student pays for 1 credit hour to take the Co-op course. This maintains the student’s status of continual enrollment.

How many semesters does the Cooperative Education student commit to be in the program? However, the employer and student may continue the Co-op experience for additional semesters, if agreeable to both parties and approved by the Career Center.
