Choosing a Career and Major

Choosing a career and major is part of the "Career Development Process." Its four phases are listed below. Each phase paves the way for the next. Completing each phase will help you make an informed choice of a career instead of a decision based on assumptions, stereotypes and guesswork. Even if you've already made a decision, you may want to affirm it by going through the process.

Career Development Process - Steps for Finding a Career that Fits

1) Self-assessment: Getting to know yourself - your interests, skills, values and personality type through career assessment instruments.

2) Exploring Occupations: Gathering specific information on occupations that interest you, including education and training needed.

3) Matching a Career to a Major: Using information from steps 1 and 2 to choose a career field and decide on a major.

4) Conducting an Effective Job Search: The preparation for, and process of finding a job.

A career or major is not normally chosen in a split second, so invest some time getting to know your likes and disliskes; then get some career-related experience to test out and affirm your choice. Only then will you know you’re in a career that fits!
